I've been a little gloomy recently, but I believe you beat me on the gloom-o-meter with your statement that "If, in the end, (compassion and love) fail, humans deserve extinction."

I can't accept that, if only because of the weight of your own argument - 99.9% of the world might be loving and compassionate, but if the other 1% happen to be those who are playing happily with all that science put into the hands of politicians - love and compassion may not matter a whit.

More realistically, if compassion, love, mutual understanding and respect fail, we may be doomed to extinction, whether we deserve it or not. There's little question the America I knew and loved is on the brink of extinction, and no one in our leadership - on either side of the aisle - seems to care. Whether Americans themselves (ourselves) can pull us back from the brink remains to be seen.
