Linda: This image is one of many I have made of junk behind the sculpture building at Michigan State University. I did not assemble the piece or alter it in any way. I only selected and framed a portion in the viewfinder.

The junk pile is a resource for the sculpture students. It is always changing and it provides an endless source of compositions--a great exercise for the eye and imagination.

It's taken me several visits to see the two sections rather than taking in the image as a whole. Another interesting example of how expectations shape perception.

I don't know Aaron Siskind, but it's a fascinating photo -- a peeling building? A birch tree?
