A Respectable Suit? © Michael Maurer Smith 2009
The function of the suit or uniform is to restrain the wearer’s behavior, particularly that which is exuberant and spontaneous. Likewise, it is designed to make the wearer appear respectable. Business people and professionals wear suits—bankers, lawyers, stockbrokers and criminal defendants.
When a person is appropriately attired, they may order mass murder in the name of ideology, religion or patriotism. Presidents, clerics, and generals all dress their part as they order thousands, even millions to their deaths. Few people would follow these orders were they issued by a naked man or woman. Few would follow them were they issued by someone dressed in faded jeans and a T-shirt. However, most people will dutifully execute the orders of an authority figure who is dressed in a proper suit or uniform.
Bernie Madoff wore suits, some of the best. People trusted him. He looked respectable.

True — but don’t forget Che Guevara!
But, with Che it’s the beret. (my poor attempt at poetry)
Ha! Check out The Marmelade Gypsy tomorrow afternoon (March 30, after 12). There is an award waiting for you on my blog! Because I really enjoy yours!
Mike I passed along this web site to my friend Bob. I think he’ll enjoy it.
